Upper GI Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)

Upper GI endoscopy, also called gastroscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the lining of the food pipe (esophagus), stomach, and first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to help doctors identify the cause of persistent digestive symptoms and investigate abnormalities.

When Is Gastroscopy Recommended?

A gastroenterologist may recommend an upper GI endoscopy for symptoms such as persistent heartburn, indigestion, upper abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, recurrent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or suspected gastrointestinal bleeding. It can help identify conditions including gastritis, peptic ulcers, reflux-related changes, Barrett’s esophagus, and other abnormalities. During the procedure, the doctor may also take a small tissue sample (biopsy) for laboratory examination when needed.

How Is Upper GI Endoscopy Performed?

Before the procedure, patients are generally asked to avoid food and follow specific instructions about drinking and medicines. Sedation or throat-numbing medicine may be provided to improve comfort. The endoscope is carefully guided through the mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum while the doctor views the digestive tract on a monitor. The procedure commonly takes around 10–20 minutes, although preparation and recovery take longer.

Recovery and Aftercare

Mild throat soreness, bloating, or nausea may occur temporarily after gastroscopy. If sedation is used, patients should arrange transportation home and follow their doctor’s instructions about driving and other activities. Seek urgent medical attention for severe or worsening abdominal or chest pain, breathing difficulty, significant bleeding, fever, or worsening swallowing problems. Doctor explains findings and next steps.

Benefits: Accurate examination of the upper digestive tract, investigation of persistent digestive symptoms, detection of ulcers and inflammation, biopsy when required, and the possibility of certain therapeutic interventions during the procedure.
