Package Overview

What Is Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)?

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is an advanced diagnostic procedure that combines endoscopy with high-frequency ultrasound to produce detailed images of the digestive tract and nearby organs. It helps doctors evaluate the pancreas, bile ducts, liver, gallbladder, stomach, oesophagus and surrounding lymph nodes with greater detail than conventional imaging in selected cases.

Why Is EUS Recommended?

EUS may be recommended when doctors need a closer assessment of unexplained abdominal pain, pancreatic or biliary abnormalities, digestive tract lesions, cysts, masses or enlarged lymph nodes. It can also help evaluate conditions identified through CT scans, MRI or other investigations.

How Is Endoscopic Ultrasound Performed?

During EUS, a thin flexible endoscope with a built-in ultrasound probe is gently guided through the mouth or, in some cases, the rectum. Ultrasound images are obtained from close to the area being examined. When medically necessary, EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration or biopsy may be performed to collect a tissue or fluid sample for laboratory analysis.

Preparation and Recovery

Preparation depends on the type of EUS and whether sedation is planned. Patients may be asked to fast before the procedure and follow specific medication instructions. After sedation, temporary drowsiness or mild throat discomfort may occur. Most patients can resume normal activities according to their doctor's advice.
