Package Overview

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), commonly called heart bypass surgery, is a surgical procedure used to improve blood flow to the heart when coronary arteries are severely narrowed or blocked. During CABG, a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body is used to create a new pathway around the blocked artery.

When Is CABG Recommended?

CABG surgery may be considered for people with significant coronary artery disease, particularly when multiple coronary arteries are affected, symptoms such as angina continue despite medication, or coronary angioplasty and stenting may not be suitable. A cardiologist and cardiac surgeon evaluate the patient's heart condition, test results and overall health before recommending surgery.

What Happens During CABG?

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. A surgeon takes a healthy blood vessel, commonly from the chest or leg, and connects it beyond the blocked portion of the coronary artery. This creates an alternative route for blood to reach the heart muscle. Depending on the patient's condition, CABG may be performed using a heart-lung machine or, in selected cases, while the heart continues beating.

Recovery After Heart Bypass Surgery

Recovery varies between individuals. Patients generally spend about a week in hospital and may require several weeks to regain strength. Cardiac rehabilitation, prescribed medicines, a heart-healthy diet, regular follow-up and lifestyle changes can support recovery and long-term heart health. Full recovery may take around two to three months.
