Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a laser treatment used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Gentle laser pulses target the trabecular meshwork to improve fluid drainage. Lowering eye pressure can help slow glaucoma progression and protect vision.
How Does SLT Work?
Anaesthetic eye drops numb the eye before treatment. An ophthalmologist places a special lens on the eye and applies low-energy laser pulses to the trabecular meshwork. SLT is usually an outpatient procedure taking minutes per eye. Eye pressure may be checked.
Who May Benefit From SLT?
SLT may be considered for patients with open-angle glaucoma or raised eye pressure, including those who have difficulty tolerating or using glaucoma eye drops. Your ophthalmologist will assess your eye pressure, glaucoma type, and eye health before recommending treatment.
Benefits and Recovery
SLT can lower eye pressure and may reduce the need for glaucoma medication in some patients. It does not restore vision already lost from glaucoma. Temporary blurred vision, mild redness, discomfort, or light sensitivity may occur. Follow-up is important to measure the response and plan further care.
Is SLT Right for You?
SLT is not suitable for every type of glaucoma, and results vary. An eye examination is essential. Discuss the benefits, risks, alternatives, and follow-up schedule with a glaucoma specialist.
