Prostate Enlargement Treatment – TURP / Laser Prostate Surgery
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate, can cause frequent urination, a weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, incomplete bladder emptying and increased nighttime urination. When medicines and lifestyle measures do not provide adequate relief, a urologist may recommend a procedure to remove or reduce excess prostate tissue.
TURP and Laser Prostate Surgery
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a well-established treatment in which a thin instrument is passed through the urethra to remove prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow. Laser prostate surgery, including laser-based prostate tissue removal or enucleation, uses laser energy to treat the enlarged portion of the prostate. The appropriate procedure depends on factors such as prostate size, symptoms, overall health and urologist assessment.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Temporary burning during urination, blood in the urine and urinary frequency can occur after TURP or other prostate procedures. Recovery varies between patients, and your urologist will provide guidance on activity, medications, catheter care and follow-up.
