Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat persistent sinus problems when medicines and other non-surgical treatments do not provide sufficient relief. Using a small endoscope and specialized instruments through the nostrils, the surgeon can open blocked sinus passages and remove obstructive tissue or nasal polyps without external facial incisions.
When Is FESS Recommended?
FESS may be considered for chronic sinusitis, recurrent sinus infections, nasal polyps, or other conditions causing persistent sinus blockage. Before surgery, an ENT specialist may assess your symptoms and perform a nasal endoscopy or CT scan to understand the condition of your sinuses.
Benefits of FESS
The procedure is designed to improve sinus drainage and nasal airflow. Depending on the underlying condition, patients may experience improvement in nasal congestion, facial pressure, breathing difficulties, and recurring sinus symptoms. Individual results vary, and ongoing medical treatment may still be needed for conditions such as chronic inflammation or allergies.
Recovery After FESS
Mild nasal congestion, discharge, discomfort, or crusting can occur during the early recovery period. Doctors may recommend saline nasal rinses, prescribed medicines, follow-up visits, and temporary restrictions on strenuous activity. Many people return to work or normal activities within one to two weeks, although complete healing can take longer.
