KUB & Renal Ultrasound
A KUB and Renal Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test used to examine the kidneys, urinary bladder and urinary tract. It uses sound waves to create real-time images, without radiation, and may be recommended when a doctor needs to assess urinary symptoms or investigate possible kidney and bladder problems.
The scan can help evaluate the size, position and appearance of the kidneys, urinary bladder and surrounding structures. Depending on the clinical situation, it may also help identify findings such as kidney stones, swelling of the kidney (hydronephrosis), urinary retention, cysts or other structural abnormalities.
When Is a KUB & Renal Ultrasound Recommended?
Your doctor may recommend a renal ultrasound or KUB ultrasound if you experience symptoms such as flank or lower abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in the urine, difficulty passing urine or recurrent urinary infections. It may also be advised as part of follow-up for an already identified urinary or kidney condition.
Preparation for the Scan
Preparation depends on the specific examination and the imaging centre's instructions. In some cases, you may be asked to drink water and keep your bladder comfortably full before the scan. Follow the instructions provided when scheduling your appointment.
