Thyroid Ultrasound and Imaging

Blood tests assess thyroid function, while imaging can provide information about the structure of the thyroid gland.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces excessive thyroid hormone. Evaluation may include TSH, free T4 and, when appropriate, T3 testing. Thyroid antibody tests and imaging may also be considered to help determine the underlying cause, such as Graves' disease or other thyroid conditions.

Preparing for a Thyroid Blood Test

Preparation requirements can vary depending on the tests being performed and the patient's circumstances. Tell your healthcare professional about medicines, supplements and existing medical conditions before testing.

Some supplements and medications can interfere with thyroid laboratory measurements. For example, the American Thyroid Association notes that biotin can interfere with certain thyroid test results, so patients should discuss biotin use with their healthcare provider before testing.
