Pediatric Nephrology

Common Signs of Kidney Problems in Children

Kidney conditions do not always cause obvious symptoms in their early stages. Depending on the underlying problem, children may experience swelling around the eyes, face, hands or feet, changes in urine frequency or amount, foamy urine, blood-colored urine, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, high blood pressure or problems with growth.

Persistent protein in urine, recurring blood in the urine, unexplained swelling, recurrent urinary problems or elevated blood pressure may warrant further evaluation by a pediatrician or pediatric kidney specialist.

Diagnosis in Pediatric Nephrology

The evaluation of a child with a suspected kidney condition is tailored to their symptoms, age and medical history. Some children with severe kidney disease may eventually require dialysis or kidney transplantation. These decisions are made according to the child's kidney function, underlying condition and overall medical needs.

Nephrotic Syndrome in Children

Nephrotic syndrome is an important condition managed by pediatric nephrologists. It can cause excessive protein loss through the urine, low blood protein levels and swelling, often around the eyes or in the legs, abdomen or other parts of the body. Foamy urine may also occur.

Treatment varies according to the underlying cause and may include medicines to reduce inflammation or immune activity, control blood pressure, manage swelling and reduce complications. Children with recurrent or complex disease may require ongoing monitoring and specialist follow-up.

Kidney Stones in Children

Although kidney stones are often associated with adults, children can also develop kidney stones. Pediatric nephrology evaluation can help identify factors contributing to stone formation and guide appropriate preventive measures. Depending on the child's condition, assessment may include blood and urine testing, dietary evaluation and follow-up to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Chronic Kidney Disease in Children

Chronic kidney disease in children requires careful monitoring because kidney function can affect blood pressure, growth, nutrition, bone health and overall development. Pediatric nephrologists may monitor kidney function and manage associated complications while addressing the underlying cause of kidney disease.
