Paediatric Ophthalmology and Child Eye Care

Paediatric Ophthalmology focuses on protecting, assessing and treating children’s vision from infancy through adolescence. A child’s visual system develops during the early years, so problems that affect how the eyes focus, align or work together may interfere with normal vision development if they are not identified and managed at the appropriate time.

A paediatric ophthalmologist is specially trained to evaluate eye conditions in children, including vision problems, eye misalignment, amblyopia, refractive errors and other childhood eye disorders. Because young children may not be able to describe changes in their vision, professional eye examinations can be important even when a child does not complain of an eye problem.

Common Eye Problems in Children

Children can develop a range of eye and vision conditions. Common problems evaluated through paediatric eye care include:

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) and reduced vision development
  • Strabismus (squint or crossed eyes)
  • Myopia (short-sightedness)
  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness)
  • Astigmatism
  • Unequal vision between the two eyes
  • Paediatric and congenital cataracts
  • Droopy eyelids (ptosis)
  • Eye movement and binocular vision disorders
  • Eye injuries and other childhood eye conditions

Refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism can affect how clearly a child sees. When significant refractive errors or differences between the eyes are not addressed, they may contribute to amblyopia.

Eye Examination for Children

A child eye examination is adapted to the child's age, development and ability to cooperate. Depending on the child's age and symptoms, an eye specialist may assess visual acuity, eye alignment, eye movements, focusing ability and refractive error.

For younger children, specialised techniques can be used when conventional letter-based vision testing is not possible. In some examinations, dilating eye drops may be used to relax the focusing muscles and obtain a more accurate assessment of the child's prescription.

Vision screening can help identify children who may have refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus, cataracts, ptosis or other conditions requiring further evaluation.

Amblyopia or Lazy Eye Treatment

Amblyopia, commonly called lazy eye, occurs when normal vision does not develop properly in one or both eyes during childhood. It can occur because of unequal refractive errors, eye misalignment or conditions that interfere with clear vision, such as cataracts or a droopy eyelid.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include prescription glasses, patching of the stronger eye, prescribed eye drops or treatment of an underlying eye condition. Some children may require surgery when conditions such as strabismus, ptosis or cataract contribute to reduced visual development. Early assessment is important because untreated amblyopia can result in persistent vision impairment.

Squint and Strabismus Treatment

Strabismus, commonly known as squint or crossed eyes, occurs when the eyes are not properly aligned. A child may have an eye that turns inward, outward, upward or downward.

Management depends on the type and cause of the misalignment. Depending on the child's condition, treatment may involve glasses, prisms, specific exercises in selected cases, amblyopia treatment or strabismus surgery to improve eye alignment and binocular function.

Refractive Errors and Glasses for Children

Children may need glasses for myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, as well as for differences in prescription between the two eyes. Appropriate optical correction can help provide clear vision and support normal visual development.

Parents should not assume that a child will complain when vision is blurry. Children may adapt to reduced vision or rely more heavily on their better-seeing eye. A comprehensive eye assessment can help identify problems that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Paediatric Cataract Care

Although cataracts are commonly associated with older adults, children can also develop cataracts. A childhood cataract can interfere with the clear passage of light to the retina and may affect normal visual development. Depending on the child's age, cataract characteristics and visual impact, management may involve observation, optical correction or cataract surgery followed by appropriate visual rehabilitation.

When Should Parents Take a Child for an Eye Check-Up?

Parents should consider an eye evaluation if a child:

  • Frequently squints or closes one eye
  • Holds books, phones or other objects unusually close
  • Has difficulty seeing the board at school
  • Complains of blurred or double vision
  • Has eyes that appear misaligned
  • Frequently tilts or turns the head to see
  • Has unusual eye movements
  • Has a drooping eyelid
  • Has a visible white or cloudy appearance in the pupil
  • Has difficulty with visually demanding activities
  • Has failed a school or routine vision screening

Some childhood vision problems may not produce obvious symptoms, which is why age-appropriate vision screening and professional assessment can be valuable.

Why Early Child Eye Care Matters

Vision develops during childhood, and certain eye conditions can interfere with this process. Identifying problems such as significant refractive errors, amblyopia and strabismus early allows an ophthalmologist to determine whether treatment or monitoring is appropriate.

The right treatment varies from child to child. A paediatric ophthalmologist can assess the child's visual development, identify the underlying problem and explain appropriate treatment and follow-up options to parents or caregivers.

Comprehensive Paediatric Eye Care

Paediatric ophthalmology combines age-appropriate eye examinations with medical, optical and, when necessary, surgical management of childhood eye conditions. The goal is to identify vision problems early, understand their cause and provide an appropriate treatment plan that supports the child's visual development.

If you notice changes in your child's vision, eye alignment or visual behaviour, consulting a paediatric ophthalmologist can help determine whether a detailed eye examination is needed.
