What Is Neuroradiology?

Neuroradiology is a specialized branch of radiology focused on imaging and diagnosing conditions affecting the brain, spine, head and neck, and nervous system. Neuroradiologists use advanced imaging techniques to examine the structure and function of these areas and help doctors understand the cause of neurological symptoms.

Depending on the clinical situation, imaging may include brain MRI, CT scans, spine MRI, CT angiography (CTA), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and other specialized studies. The appropriate examination is selected based on the patient's symptoms, medical history and the clinical question being investigated.

What Conditions Can Neuroradiology Help Evaluate?

Neuroradiology plays an important role in evaluating a wide range of neurological and spinal conditions, including:

  • Stroke and cerebrovascular disease
  • Brain tumors and other intracranial lesions
  • Head and brain injuries
  • Spinal cord and nerve disorders
  • Herniated discs and spinal degeneration
  • Brain infections and inflammatory conditions
  • Multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating disorders
  • Epilepsy-related brain abnormalities
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Cerebral aneurysms and vascular abnormalities
  • Congenital abnormalities of the brain and spine
  • Conditions affecting the pituitary gland
  • Certain disorders of the head, neck and cranial nerves

The imaging findings are interpreted together with the patient's symptoms and other clinical information to support an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.

Brain MRI and Neuro Imaging

A brain MRI provides detailed images of brain structures without using ionizing radiation. It can be used to investigate conditions such as stroke, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, infections and other neurological abnormalities.

MRI may be performed with or without contrast depending on the clinical indication. Your doctor or radiologist will determine which imaging protocol is appropriate for your condition.

CT and Stroke Imaging

CT brain scans are particularly important in emergency neurological care because they can be performed quickly and are widely available. In suspected acute stroke, brain CT may help identify bleeding and other important findings, while CT angiography can provide information about blood vessels and possible large-vessel blockage.

MRI and other advanced imaging techniques may also be used when clinically appropriate to provide additional information about brain tissue and blood flow.

Spine and Spinal Cord Imaging

Spine MRI provides detailed images of the vertebrae, discs, spinal cord, nerves and surrounding soft tissues. It can help evaluate conditions such as disc disease, spinal cord compression, spinal injuries, tumors, infections and other causes of back or neck symptoms.

CT may also be useful for evaluating spinal fractures, bony abnormalities and certain emergency or preoperative conditions.

Vascular Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology also involves imaging of the blood vessels supplying the brain and spinal cord. Techniques such as CTA, MRA and other vascular imaging studies can help evaluate conditions involving blood vessels, including suspected blockages, aneurysms and other cerebrovascular abnormalities.

For patients with neurological emergencies, the choice of imaging depends on the symptoms, timing, suspected condition and clinical requirements.

What Happens During a Neuroradiology Examination?

The examination depends on the type of imaging requested. For an MRI, the patient generally lies on a movable table that enters the MRI scanner while detailed images are obtained. Patients may need to remain still during the scan.

Before an MRI or contrast-enhanced examination, patients should inform the imaging team about relevant medical conditions, previous surgeries, allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and any implanted medical devices or metal in the body.

Preparation requirements can vary between examinations, so patients should follow the instructions provided by their healthcare team.

Why Is Specialist Neuroradiology Important?

Neurological conditions can involve complex anatomy where small abnormalities may have significant clinical importance. A neuroradiologist has specialized training in interpreting imaging of the brain, spine, head and neck, and nervous system.

Specialist interpretation can help provide clinically relevant information to neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, emergency physicians and other healthcare professionals involved in a patient's care.

When Should You Consider Neuro Imaging?

Your doctor may recommend neurological imaging when symptoms or clinical findings require further investigation. Depending on the situation, imaging may be considered for symptoms such as persistent or unexplained headaches, seizures, weakness, changes in sensation, dizziness, memory or cognitive changes, neurological deficits, back or neck pain with concerning features, or suspected stroke or trauma.

The need for a particular scan should be determined by a qualified healthcare professional rather than by symptoms alone.

Choosing the Right Neuroradiology Evaluation

The most appropriate imaging test depends on the suspected condition, symptoms, medical history and urgency of the situation. Brain MRI, CT brain scans, spine MRI, CT angiography and other neuroimaging techniques each have different clinical uses.

A radiologist or neuroradiologist reviews the images and prepares a report for the referring healthcare professional, who interprets the findings alongside the patient's overall clinical picture and recommends the next steps when necessary.

Important: Neuroradiology is a diagnostic imaging specialty. The appropriate scan, imaging protocol and treatment decisions should always be determined by qualified medical professionals based on individual patient needs.
