Lung Health Screening

Lung health screening is a preventive evaluation designed to assess how well the lungs are functioning and identify signs that may need further medical attention. It can be particularly useful for people with persistent respiratory symptoms, a history of smoking, occupational exposure to dust or chemicals, or other risk factors for lung disease.

A lung screening assessment may involve a medical history, physical examination and selected diagnostic tests based on a person's age, symptoms and risk profile. Screening is not the same for everyone, so a healthcare professional can help determine which tests are appropriate.

Why Is Lung Health Screening Important?

Many respiratory conditions can develop gradually, and early symptoms may be mild or mistaken for common problems such as seasonal allergies or a recurring cough. A lung health checkup provides an opportunity to evaluate respiratory health and investigate symptoms that persist or return frequently.

Regular assessment may help healthcare professionals identify breathing abnormalities, reduced lung function or other findings that require further evaluation. It can also provide a useful baseline for people who have known respiratory risk factors.

Who May Need Lung Health Screening?

The need for screening depends on individual risk factors rather than a single standard test for everyone. A doctor may recommend a lung screening test for people who have:

  • A persistent or recurrent cough
  • Shortness of breath or breathing difficulty
  • Wheezing or frequent respiratory symptoms
  • A current or previous history of smoking
  • Regular exposure to dust, smoke, asbestos or certain workplace chemicals
  • A family or personal history of certain lung conditions
  • Repeated chest infections
  • Other risk factors identified during a medical evaluation

People who do not have symptoms may also require specific screening in certain circumstances, such as individuals who meet established criteria for lung cancer screening. The appropriate screening method and frequency should be determined by a qualified healthcare professional.

Common Tests Used for Lung Screening

The tests used during a lung health screening depend on the person's symptoms and medical history. Depending on the situation, a healthcare professional may recommend:

Pulmonary Function Test

A pulmonary function test (PFT) measures aspects of lung function, including how much air the lungs can hold and how effectively air can be moved in and out. Spirometry is one of the commonly used tests for evaluating breathing function.

Spirometry

Spirometry is a non-invasive breathing test that measures the amount and speed of air a person can exhale. It may be used when evaluating symptoms such as persistent cough, wheezing or breathlessness and can help assess certain obstructive lung conditions.

Chest Imaging

Depending on the clinical situation, a doctor may recommend chest imaging such as a chest X-ray or, when appropriate, a CT scan. Imaging is selected based on the symptoms, suspected condition and individual risk factors rather than being automatically required for every screening visit.

Low-Dose CT for Eligible Individuals

For people who meet established eligibility criteria, low-dose CT lung cancer screening may be recommended to look for early signs of lung cancer. It is a specific screening approach and should not be treated as a routine test for every person.

What Happens During a Lung Health Checkup?

A lung health evaluation generally begins with a discussion about symptoms, smoking history, previous illnesses, medications and potential environmental or occupational exposures. The healthcare professional may then examine breathing and determine whether additional tests are appropriate.

If lung function testing is required, the patient may be asked to breathe into a specialised device according to specific instructions. Additional investigations may be recommended depending on the findings.

How to Prepare for Lung Screening

Preparation depends on the tests being performed. For a breathing test such as spirometry, you may be advised to avoid certain activities, smoking or particular medications for a specified period. Do not stop prescribed medication unless your healthcare professional specifically instructs you to do so.

If imaging or another diagnostic procedure is planned, the healthcare team will provide any necessary preparation instructions beforehand.

When Should You Seek a Lung Evaluation?

A medical evaluation is advisable if respiratory symptoms are persistent, worsening or interfering with normal activities. Symptoms such as ongoing cough, unexplained breathlessness, wheezing, chest discomfort or coughing up blood should not be ignored.

Lung health screening can support early evaluation, but it does not replace medical assessment when symptoms are present. Your healthcare professional can determine whether screening, diagnostic testing or another form of evaluation is appropriate.

Take a Proactive Approach to Lung Health

Looking after lung health involves more than a single screening test. Avoiding tobacco smoke, reducing exposure to harmful airborne substances, following workplace safety measures and seeking medical attention for persistent respiratory symptoms can all contribute to better respiratory care.

If you have concerns about your breathing or have risk factors for lung disease, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional to determine whether a lung health checkup or specific screening test is appropriate for you.
