Interventional Radiology
Interventional Radiology is a specialized field of medicine that uses real-time imaging to guide minimally invasive procedures for diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions. Instead of relying on large surgical incisions, an interventional radiologist may use a thin needle, catheter, or other small instrument to reach a specific area of the body under the guidance of X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, or MRI.
For patients who may require a procedure but do not necessarily need traditional open surgery, interventional radiology can provide a targeted treatment approach. Depending on the procedure and the patient's condition, treatment may involve local anesthesia or sedation, and some procedures can be performed without a prolonged hospital stay.
What Does Interventional Radiology Treat?
Interventional radiology treatments are used across several areas of medicine. They can be used for vascular conditions, certain cancers, bleeding, fluid collections, blockages and other conditions where precise access to a particular blood vessel or organ is required.
Common applications include:
- Vascular diseases affecting arteries and veins
- Blood vessel blockages and narrowing
- Internal bleeding and vascular abnormalities
- Certain cancer treatments
- Uterine fibroids
- Fluid collections and abscesses
- Conditions requiring image-guided tissue sampling
- Certain kidney and urinary tract interventions
- Venous conditions and blood-clot-related problems
The appropriate procedure depends on the diagnosis, medical history, imaging findings and overall health of the patient.
Common Interventional Radiology Procedures
An interventional radiologist may perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using image guidance. Common procedures include:
Angioplasty and Vascular Stenting
Angioplasty uses a catheter and balloon to help open a narrowed or blocked blood vessel. In selected cases, a vascular stent may be placed to help maintain blood flow through the treated vessel. Imaging such as fluoroscopy helps the specialist guide the catheter accurately.
Embolization
Embolization involves deliberately blocking a blood vessel using an embolic material. Depending on the clinical situation, it may be used to control bleeding, treat certain vascular abnormalities, reduce blood supply to a tumor, or manage conditions such as uterine fibroids.
Image-Guided Biopsy
An image-guided biopsy allows a specialist to obtain a tissue sample from a specific area using imaging to guide the needle. This can help doctors diagnose or further evaluate suspicious lesions and other abnormalities.
Tumor Ablation
Selected tumors can be treated using image-guided tumor ablation. Depending on the case, techniques such as radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation or cryoablation may be considered to destroy targeted tissue. CT, ultrasound or MRI can be used to guide the treatment probe.
Drainage Procedures
Interventional radiology can also be used to drain abscesses or fluid collections through a small catheter placed under image guidance. The approach and type of imaging used depend on the location and nature of the collection.
Catheter-Directed Treatments
Catheter-based techniques allow medication, devices or other treatments to be delivered directly to a targeted area. For example, catheter-directed thrombolysis can deliver clot-dissolving medication directly to a blood clot in selected circumstances.
Benefits of Image-Guided Procedures
One of the key advantages of minimally invasive interventional radiology is the ability to target a specific area while limiting the size of the access point. Compared with some conventional surgical approaches, appropriate IR procedures may involve less tissue disruption and can be associated with shorter recovery periods or hospital stays. However, the benefits and risks vary considerably according to the individual procedure and the patient's health.
The use of real-time imaging also allows the interventional radiologist to visualize anatomy while advancing a catheter, needle or other instrument toward the treatment area.
What Happens During an Interventional Radiology Procedure?
Before treatment, the medical team reviews the patient's symptoms, medical history, medications and relevant imaging or laboratory results. The patient may receive instructions regarding eating, drinking and medications before the procedure.
During the procedure, the patient is positioned on an imaging table and connected to appropriate monitoring equipment. After the treatment area is prepared and, when appropriate, numbed with local anesthetic or supplemented with sedation, the interventional radiologist uses imaging to guide the required catheter or needle to the target area.
The exact process varies depending on whether the procedure involves biopsy, drainage, angioplasty, embolization, ablation, vascular treatment or another intervention.
Recovery After Interventional Radiology
Recovery depends on the type and complexity of the procedure. Some patients can return home after a period of observation, while others may need hospital monitoring. Patients may receive instructions about wound care, physical activity, medications and follow-up appointments.
It is important to follow the treating team's post-procedure instructions and promptly report symptoms such as significant bleeding, increasing pain, fever, swelling or other unexpected changes.
Why Is Interventional Radiology Important?
Interventional radiology brings diagnostic imaging and targeted treatment together. By combining imaging expertise with minimally invasive techniques, interventional radiologists can diagnose conditions through image-guided biopsies and treat selected vascular, oncological and other conditions through targeted procedures.
Whether an interventional radiology procedure is appropriate depends on the patient's individual diagnosis and clinical circumstances. A specialist evaluation is essential to determine the most suitable treatment option.

Patient Testimonials
I had been dealing with the same problem for several months and had already tried different treatments. What I appreciated most was the detailed discussion during my consultation. Instead of simply prescribing medicines, the doctor took the time to understand my symptoms and explain what could be causing them. The treatment plan was clear, and I started noticing improvement gradually. I am very thankful for the guidance I received
