Ectropion repair is a specialized eyelid surgery used to correct an outward-turning eyelid, most commonly affecting the lower eyelid. Ectropion can prevent the eyelid from protecting and lubricating the eye properly, leading to watering, dryness, irritation, redness, sensitivity to wind or light, and a gritty sensation.
When Is Ectropion Repair Needed?
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Mild symptoms may sometimes be managed temporarily with lubricating eye drops or ointments. When ectropion causes persistent discomfort, inadequate eyelid closure, or exposure of the eye surface, an ophthalmologist may recommend ectropion surgery to restore the eyelid to a more appropriate position.
How Is Ectropion Surgery Performed?
The surgical approach is selected according to the underlying cause. Lower eyelid tightening, repositioning of the eyelid, or procedures addressing the inner or outer eyelid support may be used. If scarring has shortened the eyelid skin, a skin graft or flap may sometimes be required. Many procedures are performed under local anaesthesia as a day-care surgery.
Recovery After Ectropion Repair
Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, or a gritty sensation around the operated eyelid can occur during recovery. Patients are generally advised to follow their surgeon's instructions regarding eye drops, wound care, physical activity, and follow-up appointments. Recovery varies depending on the surgical technique and individual healing.
