Lu-177 DOTATATE PRRT (Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy) is a targeted radionuclide treatment used for selected somatostatin receptor-positive neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). It combines a tumor-targeting peptide with the radioactive isotope Lutetium-177, allowing radiation to be delivered directly to cells that express somatostatin receptors.
Who May Benefit from Lu-177 DOTATATE PRRT?
PRRT may be considered for certain patients with advanced, unresectable, or metastatic neuroendocrine tumors when appropriate receptors are present and the patient meets medical eligibility criteria. A specialist may recommend imaging such as a Ga-68 DOTATATE PET/CT or another receptor-based scan to assess suitability.
How Does PRRT Work?
During Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy, the radiolabeled medicine binds to somatostatin receptors on tumor cells. Lutetium-177 then delivers localized radiation to help control tumor growth. Treatment is generally administered intravenously in carefully planned cycles, with monitoring before and after each session.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Patients may need temporary precautions after treatment because the medicine emits radiation. Follow-up appointments, blood tests, imaging, and clinical assessment help doctors evaluate response and monitor for side effects.
