Donor Egg / Donor Sperm Treatment
Donor egg and donor sperm treatment can provide an assisted fertility option for individuals or couples who may not be able to conceive using their own eggs or sperm. Depending on the medical assessment, treatment may involve IVF with donor eggs, donor sperm insemination, or IVF using donor sperm.
When Is Donor Treatment Considered?
Donor eggs may be considered when ovarian reserve is significantly reduced, egg quality is affected, previous IVF cycles have not been successful, or certain genetic or medical conditions make using a patient's own eggs unsuitable. Donor sperm treatment may be considered in cases of severe male-factor infertility, absence of sperm, certain inherited conditions, or when clinically appropriate.
What Does the Treatment Involve?
The fertility specialist first evaluates both partners and discusses medical history, fertility factors, and treatment goals. For donor egg IVF, eggs from an appropriately screened donor are fertilized with sperm and the resulting embryo may be transferred to the recipient's uterus. Donor sperm may be used for IUI or IVF depending on the individual's circumstances.
