Treatment for Aplastic Anemia & Bone Marrow Failure
Aplastic anemia is a rare but serious blood disorder in which bone marrow does not produce enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Treatment depends on disease severity, age, overall health, donor availability, and the underlying cause.
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Evaluation may include complete blood counts, reticulocyte testing, bone marrow examination, and other tests to confirm aplastic anemia and distinguish it from other causes of low blood counts. HLA testing and genetic or molecular evaluation may also help guide treatment decisions.
Aplastic Anemia Treatment Options
Depending on the individual case, treatment may include blood or platelet transfusions, medicines that suppress an abnormal immune response, medicines that support blood cell production, or an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant). Second-line treatment can be considered when initial therapy does not provide an adequate response or when the condition returns.
