Uterine Fibroid Treatment
Uterine fibroids are common, non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. While some fibroids cause no symptoms, others can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, pelvic pressure, lower back pain, frequent urination, or difficulty becoming pregnant.
When Is Fibroid Treatment Needed?
Treatment depends on the size, number, location, symptoms, age, and future pregnancy plans of the patient. Small fibroids without symptoms may only require regular monitoring. When symptoms interfere with daily life or cause problems such as heavy bleeding or anemia, medical or procedural treatment may be considered.
Uterine Fibroid Treatment Options
Depending on individual needs, treatment may include medicines to control heavy bleeding and pain, hormonal therapies, or minimally invasive procedures. Myomectomy removes fibroids while preserving the uterus and may be considered for women who wish to maintain fertility. Other options can include uterine artery embolization (UAE) or radiofrequency ablation in suitable patients. Hysterectomy, which removes the uterus, may be recommended in certain cases when other treatments are unsuitable or ineffective.
