Coagulation Profile (PT/INR & aPTT)
A Coagulation Profile is a group of blood tests used to assess how well your blood clots. It commonly includes Prothrombin Time (PT), INR (International Normalized Ratio), and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT). These tests can help doctors evaluate abnormal bleeding or clotting and monitor certain blood-thinning medicines.
What Does a Coagulation Profile Test Check?
The PT/INR test primarily evaluates one part of the blood-clotting process and is commonly used to monitor warfarin therapy. The aPTT test assesses another part of the clotting pathway and may be used to investigate unexplained bleeding or monitor unfractionated heparin treatment.
Doctors may recommend a PT INR and aPTT test before certain surgeries or procedures, when there is unusual bruising or bleeding, or when a patient has a condition that may affect blood clotting.
Why Is This Test Important?
Abnormal results do not always indicate a serious disease. They may be influenced by medications, liver problems, vitamin K deficiency, or other medical conditions. Your doctor will interpret the results alongside your medical history, symptoms, and other laboratory findings.
Test Preparation
Usually, no special preparation is required for a coagulation blood test, but some medicines can affect results. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you take, particularly blood thinners. Do not stop prescribed medication unless your doctor advises you to do so.
