Poisoning & Drug Overdose Treatment

Poisoning and drug overdose can become life-threatening within a short period and require immediate medical assessment. Poisoning may occur after accidental or intentional exposure to medicines, pesticides, household chemicals, industrial substances, alcohol, or other toxic agents. Early emergency treatment can help identify the substance involved, assess its effects on the body, and provide appropriate supportive care.

When Is Emergency Treatment Needed?

Immediate medical attention is important when a person may have swallowed, inhaled, injected, or otherwise been exposed to a potentially harmful substance. Symptoms can vary depending on the substance and amount involved and may include excessive sleepiness, confusion, vomiting, breathing difficulties, seizures, abnormal heart rate, loss of consciousness, or changes in blood pressure.

A person who may have been poisoned should not be made to wait for symptoms to develop. AIIMS National Poisons Information Centre advises seeking medical care promptly and not attempting to treat poisoning without appropriate medical guidance.

How Poisoning and Drug Overdose Are Evaluated

Emergency doctors begin with a rapid assessment of the patient's airway, breathing, circulation, consciousness, and vital signs. The medical team may review the suspected substance, time of exposure, medicines being taken, medical history, and symptoms.

Depending on the situation, investigations may include blood and urine tests, blood glucose testing, electrocardiography (ECG), imaging, or specific toxicology tests. The treatment plan is based on the substance involved, the patient's clinical condition, and the potential effects on vital organs.

Treatment for Poisoning and Overdose

Treatment is individualized according to the type and severity of poisoning. Emergency care may include oxygen and breathing support, intravenous fluids, correction of blood glucose or electrolyte abnormalities, treatment of seizures or abnormal heart rhythms, and continuous monitoring.

When an appropriate antidote is available, doctors may administer it based on the suspected or confirmed toxin. Certain decontamination treatments may also be considered in selected cases. Activated charcoal, for example, is not appropriate for every poisoning and should only be used when medically indicated.

Patients with severe poisoning may require intensive monitoring or admission to an intensive care unit. A multidisciplinary team may be involved when there is significant respiratory, neurological, cardiovascular, kidney, or liver involvement.

Common Poisoning and Overdose Cases Managed

• Medication overdose
• Accidental medicine poisoning
• Pesticide and agricultural chemical poisoning
• Household chemical exposure
• Industrial or occupational toxic exposure
• Alcohol-related poisoning
• Suspected drug toxicity
• Chemical ingestion or inhalation
• Multiple-substance exposure
• Unknown or unidentified poisoning

Why Timely Treatment Matters

Some toxic exposures can cause serious complications before symptoms become obvious. Prompt emergency assessment allows doctors to identify potentially dangerous effects and begin supportive treatment without unnecessary delay. In India, the National Poisons Information Centre at AIIMS provides poison-related information and toxicology guidance as a national resource.

If someone has collapsed, has difficulty breathing, has a seizure, is extremely drowsy, or cannot be awakened after a suspected overdose or poisoning, emergency medical care should be sought immediately.
