Root Canal Treatment (RCT)
Root Canal Treatment (RCT), also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure used to treat a tooth when the pulp inside it becomes inflamed or infected. Deep tooth decay, cracks, dental trauma, repeated dental procedures, or an abscess can damage the pulp and cause persistent pain or sensitivity.
When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?
A dentist may recommend root canal treatment when you experience severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods, pain while chewing, swollen or tender gums, or signs of infection. In some cases, pulp damage may exist even when symptoms are limited, so a professional dental examination is important.
How Is RCT Performed?
During an RCT procedure, the dentist numbs the affected tooth, removes the infected or inflamed pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals them with a filling material. A permanent filling or dental crown may then be recommended to protect the treated tooth and restore its function.
